Thirty minutes later, we arrive at the apartment Michael owns in New York City. Itâs smaller than his house, but I really love the open plan layout and the balcony it has, with a great view of New York. âI told you we took a wrong turn,â I say to him as I wheel my bike through to the hallway. He grins at me sheepishly.
âDonât blame me,â he retorts, âEvery street in New York looks the same. I usually only commute to the office from here.â He places his bike against mine in the hallway and then makes his way to the kitchen area. I glance out of the window while waiting for him to return and smile, you can see a small part of central park from here.
A few minutes later Michael comes back from the kitchen area with the bottle of wine and two glasses, he places the glasses on the table to pour them and pops the cork out the bottle of wine. He carefully fills up the wine glasses and hands one to me. âDo you want to take these out on the balcony?â I ask and he shakes his head.
âWhy donât we stay in here for a little bit,â he replies and though I smile and go to sit next to him on the long black leather sofa, I cannot help feeling a little disappointment. Then I mentally scold myself and remind myself how lucky I am to even be here in the first place. I turn my attention back to Michael who I notice has opened a cardboard file in his hands, I am not sure where he has got it from, but he is scanning it carefully. I watch him with admiration, Michael takes his job very seriously and I know he works hard to ensure all his staff have what they need to do their job. I take a sip of my wine and my eyes drift to Michaelâs glass which is untouched in front of him on the glass table.
âAre you ok?â I ask as I notice he is frowning while he scans the papers and suddenly, he looks up at me as if he has only just remembered I am here.
âIâm sorry.â He quickly jumps off the couch, he goes over to the desk in the far corner of the room and places the cardboard file on it, then moves to join me on the sofa. Michael smiles as he sits down and reaches for his glass of wine, but I can tell there is something bothering him.
âAre you sure youâre, ok?â I ask and he nods while taking a large sip of his wine. Perhaps its work stress, he doesnât really talk about work, but being the founder and boss of your own company must really cause a headache, especially if it involves catering to some of Hollywoodâs most famous film stars.
We sit there in silence for a few moments quietly sipping our wine and I am thinking that I wish we could be out on the balcony.
